Other than that, my observations on the differences are as follows: Both the German dub and Funimation version of the scene edit the footage itself rather than use subtitles (as is done in the remade scene in the English Case Closed Episode One: The Great Detective Turned Small Blu-ray), though Funimation replaced all the Japanese text on the top shelf, whereas the German dub only altered the text on a single book to read “Conan Doyle.” In the Funimation version, there’s also what appears to be a “JLM” watermark in the left corner when the edited footage begins, perhaps as a way to mark that it’s altered. So, I decided to put together a comparison of each streaming service that I’m aware of and have access to, along with a Funimation English-release DVD that I own, using a classic shot from Episode 2-which actually ends up being a fascinating moment to compare because of how localized versions handle the books where Shinichi finds his new name.
